Centre for Innovation in Distributed Systems

RFID Centre

The groups primary research focus is in the area of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) with a particular interest in projects that are applied and industrial in nature. The group has been leading the drive towards RFID adoption by Irish industry which is proportionally low compared with other EU countries. The group has secured funding for research activity from Enterprise Ireland, EU (ESTIIC and RFID in Europe) and also through Technological Sector Research funding. CIDS is recognised by many as being the primary research centre of RFID technological research in Ireland and as such has organised a number of well attended Conferences on RFID in 2007 and 2008, and has worked on RFID research projects in a number of sectors including:

  • Logistics
  • Telecommunications
  • Medical
  • Food
  • Pharmaceutical

RFID technologies used in the groups research include the full spectrum from LF to Microwave and from passive to active. The group has also been a key player in a project on the development of a middleware solution to manage RFID data and route it between tag readers and enterprise systems using Mobile Networks such as GSM.

CIDS has managed to secure funding for many industrial based projects. To see if your project costs can be supplemented, please contact us at the RFID Centre.

The Centre for Innovation in Distributed Systems will present 3 Papers at the RFID in Europe 2011 event taking place in Praque at the end of March. They will present a paper at each of the Academic Conference, SME Conference and at the Government Session.

Projects

Bio-sample Tracking

CIDS  have developed in conjunction with Universal Trace Ltd. an advanced system for automated tracking and monitoring of pathology samples based on RFID. This project was supported by Enterprise Irelands Innovation Voucher Scheme.

iPhone Development

CIDS have developed and deployed advanced applications for iPhone and iPad devices in conjunction with our Industry Partner companies. CIDS are available to discuss R&D requirements that you have for mobile applications using any of the popular platforms.

System of Systems

System of Systems describes the interaction between different independent systems to achieve an overall goal that is greater than the sum of each component part. CIDS is a currently researching in the area of SoS.

Reality Mining

Currently we are researching the feasibility of combining Internet Of Things (IoT) technologies and Reality Mining techniques to provide for systems where the actions of smart objects may be monitored and predicted.
